Purify Cover

JAMES & BOBBY PURIFY

JAMES AND BOBBY PURIFY shot to fame in late 1966 with their debut single for Bell Records, ‘I’m Your Puppet’,which quickly became established as a soul classic. Written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, the song was a smash hit, reaching the US Top 10 Pop and R&B Billboard charts, and was nominated for a Grammy. Thereafter, the pair recorded two albums and several singles for Bell before eventually leaving Bell in 1968. Named after their biggest hit, I’M YOUR PUPPET includes all of James And Bobby Purify’s recordings during that dizzy two year period, including both LPs, all non-album tracks and a clutch of recordings which only surfaced in 2002. Many tracks are currently unavailable on CD.

DEEP DIP INTO MISSISSIPPI SOUL VOL 2

THE GREENVILLE CONNECTION

As far as we are aware, this is the only ever retrospective of Mississippi music with the Greenville connection.  As the notes state, this compilation  is probably the first time these songs have been available since the records were pressed over 50 years ago.  No big names here – no soul or blues superstars and no national hits either, but you will find a heartbeat of little label music – the backbone of Afro-American culture as it was heard in the juke joints and bars of the Mississippi Delta in the 60s.

 Lee Moses

LEE MOSES

How Much Longer Must I Wait? Singles and Rarities 1965-1972 collects all of Lee Moses’ non-album singles and B-sides, plus three never-released tracks together for the first time ever. Most of the material here pre-dates 1971’s Time and Place album, reflecting his initial bid for stardom via a series of now-legendary 45s recorded with Atlanta producer Johnny Brantley. As for the unreleased recordings – much like the man himself, little is known about them. What remains is an oeuvre that has become synonymous with raw and emotionally charged Southern soul. Southern soul singer Lee Moses began his career in the clubs of Atlanta, where he performed alongside the likes of Gladys Knight. Later came a move New York, where he found some success with his only LP Time and Place, before returning to Atlanta as his bid for stardom faltered.

Brothers Sisters

BROTHERS & SISTERS OF SOUL

The Red Onion label brings us another interesting compilation this time featuring a mix of male, female and mixed groups in their Relative Soul series. Obscurities abound and it would be a very committed collector who had these outstanding tracks on original 45 in their collection. So we thank Red Onion for making these rare tracks available to us all.

Soul Country 2

SOUL OVER THE COUNTRY VOL 2

It's been almost a year since volume one appeared and that was very well received by everyone. We are pleased to say that this second set keeps up the same high standard bringing together the usual interesting mix of singers and material from across the USA. The underrated Lee Moses (look out for a CD and LP that covers his recordings from 1965-72, due next month) and the little known Anthony Swete stand side-by-side with the better known Clarence Carter, Lavern Baker and Big Maybelle. It all adds up to an hour’s worth of very listenable music.

SOUL DIAMONDS VOL 12

Vol 8 in this series of Soul Diamonds from Buried Treasures certainly keeps up the standard set in previous CDs. As in all the other releases this set combines some of the rarest and most obscure tracks from a single label. 22 songs of the highest class. We wouldn't think there are too many soul music fans that have John Ladrew, Avalons, Sedatrius Brown or Elaine 45’s in their collections. Lovely stuff!
